POLO Division Report

The 2004/5 season has seen a series of changes both for the league and our Polo Teams. Following the Queen of the Pussycats (Lisa) request to become a Pitbull, and a lack of interest in forming a second team from the rest of her team, Bristol ended up entering one team into Div 4. Furthermore, there was also a lack of teams entering the league, so only 3 tournaments occurred. In addition the Pitbulls team suffered absences by key players, who where having their brain removed, going skiing (Lisa), or moving house (Tony). We did though have two cameo appearances by Rob Hignell, en route to the Pyrenees to open his out-door centre.

Following the final tournament on Saturday 115th Jan, the Pitbulls ended up a creditable 3. Narrowly missing a play-off position for promotion into Div 3. From the league table below, the separation between second and fourth place was very close, although Aberfan’s spirits will probably be hardest hit, being probably the youngest, and most bad tempered team in the league!

Certain cynics in the squad were relieved about missing the play-offs; “This is a truly excellent result – a very respectable 3rd place and cleverly avoiding the playoffs by 1 point – masterful!” said a player from Thornbury!

On a more positive note I interviewed Zachary Gillett, the sole member of the Pitbulls Supporters Club, who was celebrating in a bar in Clifton.

How did you feel about the performance of the Pitbulls on Saturday 15th January? “It was very exciting and I had been looking forward to it all week at school.”

What did you think of the Pitbulls on Saturday? “James was very very good in goal, and Nick had some terrific shots on the goal (fortunately the oppositions – sic Ed) and very very good goals. Chris was a very very good blocker in deed, and Simon was very good crashing forward into other players. Harvey is a very good pusher, and he’s smelly!”

Zach how do you think the Pitbulls can improve? “I think they need to save more goals, get more accurate in their passing, and keep the ball to themselves.” What did you think about the other teams? “They shouted loud, and the Welsh ones (AberfanC) were very “eggy”!”

Thanks for your input Zach, but one last question, what was the most disappointing thing about Saturday? “My Daddy wasn’t playing.”

Well on that final soppy point, I hope I will be contributing more than articles next season, and please remember Zach is always looking for new members of the supporters Club.

PS. The Pitbulls are always looking for new players!
