[ March 2023. We are having to limit our new membership; please see our membership page for details. ]
Bristol Canoe Club is a club for Canoe and Kayak paddlers in the Bristol area. As at January 2024, we have around 130 adult members (and just a very few youth members). We are an informal club and are not highly organised.
The club is active in white water trips, polo, marathon racing, and some surfing; see our Calendar here. Members also organise some continental trips, as well as many social events during the year. We organise occasional formal beginner’s courses. Please note: We don’t have any facilities for taking out groups, of either adults or youths. Also, we do not have any kayaks or canoes available for rent to the public.
From April to September the club meets at Baltic Wharf, in Bristol Docks, on Thursday evenings, at about 6pm. During the winter, we meet on Monday evenings at Bristol South swimming pool, in Bedminster, at 8.00pm for pool sessions, followed by Polo training at 8.45pm. Afterwards, the club generally adjourns to the nearest pub for a chat. Please note the change of day from Wednesday to Monday for winter 2024-2025!
Some coaching may be available on club nights, but it cannot be guaranteed, since it depends on the goodwill of members willing to teach beginners. We have canoe equipment available for club members to try out different aspects of the sport. We expect club members to provide their own equipment in due course.
If you are a complete beginner interested in learning to paddle, you should contact the club secretary, and should sign up to one of our beginner’s courses.
Club membership costs £40 per year for full adult membership (as of Nov 2024). Youth membership costs £28. Temporary membership costs £5 for each time the member partakes in club activities, up to a maximum of three weeks. Pool sessions cost £5.00 for adult members, £7.00 for adult non-members. Polo training sessions cost extra.
A programme of club events is produced at regular intervals, and this indicates the name of the person who should be contacted for more information. We also publish a quarterly newsletter with articles about club activities. We have an active email discussion list, used for arranging trips and socials, etc; this list is open to club members only.
